Spring rains, severe South East winds in Franschhoek and 10 day summer heat wave made the 2010 harvest one of the most labor intensive and logistically demanding vintages in recent memory- Especially canopy management.

Although crops for the production of our wines and grapes to Bergkelder were down by 10% mainly Chardonnay, smaller berry size – Pleased with the overall quality.

Alcohol levels across red and white varietals were well managed on Akkerdal terroir driven vineyards, making for refreshing and well balanced wines.

The averse vintage conditions for Downy mildew, Powdery Mildew and Boitrytis had been overcome, through access to sophisticated weather station data to spray the right products during growth stages especially flowering to harvest.

The harvest began a week later than usual, kicking off in mid February, but ended a week earlier end of March.

Pieter Hanekom – Owner winemaker said the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc showing excellent fruit flavours. The 2010 reds were showing excellent colour and exceptional fruit flavours, thanks to the smaller than averagesize of the berries and phenolic ripenessgiving an excellent fruit to skin ratio.  Early indications are that this year should produce outstanding Shiraz, Mourvedre, Grenache Noir, Carignan, Viognier (Rhone blend) as well as Malbec, Tannat, Tempranillo and Merlot wines blends.

Look out for the new range of Akkerdal wines to be released in September 2010.
